Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong SoHo: A Paragon of Green Building

Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong SoHo is a site-specific, 36-storey, 274-roomed business hotel, synergizing green design practices and operation to create a functional sustainable built environment.

Efficient building services engineering managed to save energy prolong life-cycle, reduce maintenance cost and operational manpower. Rainwater and renewable solar energy are reused. Green technology innovations such as Peltier headboard, permanent magnet motor fan coil unit (or intelligent fan cool unit, iFCU) and Energy Optimization System (EOS) for HVAC System raise comfort level of guests whilst reducing energy consumption. PowerBoxTM system is fitted for comprehensive monitoring and management to enable optimum performance of the hotel.

Since the grand opening in the end of November 2012, the actual hotel’s annual energy consumption has been recorded at 192kWh/m2 at 90.5% occupancy rate. It is 56% lower than the energy consumption benchmark for hotels set by Hong Kong EMSD in 2007.

Not only a successful quality building, the Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong SoHo is also the first high-rise building in the world that achieved four platinum or equivalent of green awards – US LEED by the US Green Building Council, Hong Kong BEAM Plus by the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Green Mark by the Building & Construction Authority in Singapore, as well as a Three-Star by China Green Building Council. From this foundation, the hotel becomes a paragon of green building enriching the building industry with a reasonable return of investment.

It helps Yau Lee Group towards its ultimate goal of creating a worldwide sustainable living.  As a result, REC Green Technologies Co., Ltd was established in 2011 to provide to R&D energy saving solutions in the market. It aims to share the proven energy saving solutions and designs to be applied by the stakeholders.
  • The hotel raises awareness of the building industry. It reminds the industry to keep balance between commercial orientation, buildability and sustainability.
